Commonplace book and miscellany [manuscript], ca. 1600-ca. 1850.

Originally used as a commonplace book, presumably compiled by Thomas Medcalf in the 17th century; project abandoned then used for other purposes. Includes: personal accounts, 1704-1715; constabulary accounts for Burton, 1706; a few newspaper cuttings, ca. 1850, and poems; a quotation from Dr. Donne; an agreement between John Beckwith and Marmaduke Haxwill about a messuage in Fountains Earth, Yorkshire (cataloged separately). At the back: Automachia or the self conflict of a Christian; marriage contract between the Elector Palatine and Princess Elizabeth, 1612; articles of dispute in the divorce suit between the Earl of Essex and the Lady Frances Howard, 1612; copy of a letter from Raleigh to Robert Carr, "1619"; the arraignment of Raleigh at Winchester, November 17, 1603 (differs in some essentials from the printed account, 1648); names of the king's officers and their fees, 1621, 1623; a note of farm animals and various accounts, 1707-1717; medical receipt (leaf 202); and other items.
